In response to an apparent change in North Atlantic Right Whale (NARW) distribution, Canada’s Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) has invested significantly more funding and personnel in research to protect and support the recovery of North Atlantic right whales. This documents a summary of the Many monitoring and research initiatives that have been underway for multiple years, and planned to continue in 2020, including: aerial and vessel surveys, passive acoustic monitoring, underwater noise impacts studies, assessment of risk of NARW entanglements in fishing gear & vessel strikes, NARW prey studies, NARW satellite tagging studies, NARW habitat modelling, and investigations of novel NARW detection technologies.
