Abstract

In respond to IWC Resolutions 2001-3, 2004-1 and 2005-3, this paper presents information of Japan???s voluntary contribution to conservation and research on the western gray whale for the period from May 2019 to April 2020. Several POP sightings have been reported from the coast of Ishikawa prefecture, in the Sea of Japan in May-June 2019. From dorsal scar marks, it was concluded that those corresponded to re-sightings of the same individual whale sighted during March 2019 in Ishikawa and Fukui Prefectures. No anthropogenic mortality due to entanglement or other causes has been reported from the adjacent waters off Japan in the period investigated.
