Abstract
Upgraded working paper. The IWC has recognized the concerns regarding the potential impacts of anthropogenic noise on marine life since 2004 (IWC SC/54), and the Scientific Committee has repeatedly expressed concern regarding the potential impacts on cetaceans (IWC SC/59). As both the scale of underwater noise impacts, and recognition of their effects continue to grow, the importance of this issue continues to be recognized throughout the international scientific community. The purpose of this document is to provide a brief update on several of these international fora and recent research efforts. This is not a comprehensive review, but is part of an annual update on new progress in the past year.
