Abstract

The ability of a small population to recover after a severe decline is
strongly influenced by its reproductive biology. Unfortunately, little is
known about many key reproductive parameters of the vaquita (Phocoena
sinus), a small porpoise that is nearly extinct due to entanglement in fishing
nets, many of which were set illegally (Thomas et al. 2017). Improved
knowledge of key life history parameters of this critically endangered species
would improve our understanding of its potential for recovery.
