Twenty individual blue whales were photo-identified off Madagascar in 1996 (n=18) and 2012 (n=2). There were no matches within or between years. The identification photos were uploaded into the Southern Hemisphere Blue Whale Catalogue where they will be compared to photos from other regions of the Indian Ocean, per recommendation by the Scientific Committee (IWC, 2021). There are few data from the southwest region of the Indian Ocean, including the waters adjacent to Madagascar. Photo-identification data from the area may provide information on residency, connectivity between regions, and movement patterns.
