Full Title

Incidental mortality of cetaceans in krill fishery: a summary of CCAMLR discussions in 2023

Author

Nat Kelly, Russell Leaper, Marco Favero, Nathan Walker, Isaac Forster And Steve Parker

Authors Summary

In 2022, SC-CAMLR reconvened its Working Group on Incidental Mortality Associated with Fishing (WG-IMAF), and also reached out to IWC-SC for assistance in better understanding the reasons for humpback whale mortalities in the krill trawl fishery, and to avoid them in the future. The subsequent assistance provided by IWC-SC has been gratefully received. SC/69B/HIM/xx summarises discussions of whales and excluder devices within various CCAMLR meetings and workshops in 2023 relating to IMAF, in addition to the related IMAF workplan, and extends a request to IWC-SC for continuing collaboration, including finalising a whale mortality data recording form and associated training materials, and further assistance with methods to monitor and study whales around krill fishing vessels and krill trawling nets, refining cetacean exclusion devices, and the potential to devise move-on rules and other mitigation methods.

Abstract

In 2022, SC-CAMLR reconvened its Working Group on Incidental Mortality Associated with Fishing (WG-IMAF), and also reached out to IWC-SC for assistance in better understanding the reasons for humpback whale mortalities in the krill trawl fishery, and to avoid them in the future. This paper summarises discussions of whales and excluder devices within various CCAMLR meetings and workshops in 2023 relating to IMAF, in addition to the related IMAF workplan, and extends a request to IWC-SC for continuing collaboration including finalising a whale mortality data recording form and associated training materials.
