Abstract
multi-methods vessel survey undertaken in the Gulf of Masirah, Oman was conducted between 26th November ? 12th December 2023 with the primary aim of investigating ASHW spatial ecology and behaviour within core home range using satellite tagging and biologging devices. Sightings included 16 of ASHWs, two of Bryde?s whales (Baleanoptera edeni) and two of humpback dolphins (Sousa plumbea) over 17 days available for surveys. Of the 10 individual ASHW identified, one was fitted with a Type C Argos Wildlife Computers Mk10 Splash tag satellite transmitter which transmitted for a total of 89 days. This animal remained within ASHW core home range for the entire tracking period. Unmanned aerial vehicles were successfully used to collect aerial images for assessment of body condition from eight animals and to deploy biologging devices (DTAG and CATS) on five animals on seven occasions.ΓΏ ASHW were observed in areas of high prey availability, and the detection of song and results of satellite telemetry work provide additional evidence demonstrating the importance of this area to ASHW for both feeding and reproduction. Whilst regional marine mammal research efforts continue to grow, the opportunities for addressing urgent resource management requirements in this Important Marine Mammal Area are now being promoted by the Oman Environment Authority through the funding of this recent survey and recent approval for the formation of a national committee for the management of ASHW.
