This paper provides a description of the data in Happywhale to date, and of automated image recognition development in support of cetacean photo-ID. We list by region the details of a photo-ID based dataset of 96,064 individuals in 272,428 ID d humpback whale encounters, as well as of opportunistic data from an additoinal 21,273 mostly photo-supported encounters of 75 cetacean species and ecotypes
