The franciscana dolphin (Pontoporia blainvillei) is the most threatened odontocete species of the southwestern Atlantic Ocean, mainly due to bycatch mortality. The IWC Scientific Committee completed the review of the species' status at last year?s meeting and agreed that further review of the bycatch estimates should be conducted. This report provides a brief review of stock-specific information on bycatch mortality estimates to assist the Committee in developing a Comprehensive Assessment of this species, if feasible. Estimates of bycatch mortality are available for many of the eleven recognized Franciscana Management Areas (FMAs), even though some information on bycatch is available for all FMAs. Considering conducting a Comprehensive Assessment of the franciscana we believe that a workshop with experts and data analysts should be conducted to discuss existing and potentially new estimates. We propose that such a workshop be held in 2025 and that a report be presented to the Committee with the goal of initiating the assessment in 2026.
