Full Title

The Global Distribution of Marine Seismic Airgun Surveys Relative to IMMAs

Author

Reyes Reyes, M.V., Zuasquita, E., Andriolo, A., Entrup, N., Weilgart, L.

Authors Summary

The International Whaling Commission (IWC) initiated a global review of marine seismic airgun surveys for hydrocarbon exploration, spanning from 2023 to 2028. This initiative responds to growing concerns about how these activities affect marine life, especially cetaceans. An intersessional correspondence group was formed during the 68c Scientific Committee meeting to develop and circulate a comprehensive questionnaire aimed at gathering detailed data on both current and planned marine seismic airgun surveys for hydrocarbon exploration. The objective is to compile a global overview of seismic survey activities, regulatory frameworks, and mitigation strategies to address the environmental impacts on marine life. This report presents the findings from the responses received from various stakeholders, including governmental agencies, private companies, non-governmental organizations, and research institutions.
