Full Title

Review and analysis of the documents of acoustic research presented at the 2022-2023 International Whaling Commission Scientific and Conservation Committees.

Author

Authors Summary

This study conducts a scientometric analysis of documents presented to the IWC Scientific Committee in 2022 and 2023, focusing on acoustics and underwater noise. The goal is to inform decision-making processes and provide a comprehensive overview of discussions on the topic, aiding in understanding and mitigating negative impacts on the marine environment. Over the two years studied, there was a significant increase in the proportion of studies dedicated to acoustics, rising from 7.81% to 23.24% of total documents. However, research addressing underwater noise remained limited, comprising only 3.5% of documents in 2023, indicating a need for further exploration in this domain. The Conservation Management Plans subcommittee (CMP) notably contributed the most documents on acoustics, underlining its importance in advancing knowledge in this field. Approximately 83% of authors contributed to only one article, while 16.8% contributed to up to two articles, suggesting a need for more consistency among researchers in publishing on this topic. Documents presented at the IWC Scientific Committee Meetings emphasized initiatives aimed at understanding and mitigating the impact of underwater noise on cetaceans, stressing the importance of collaboration between organizations such as IWC, CMS, and IMO. Topics covered included vessel noise, seismic exploration, and offshore wind energy, reflecting a global interest in understanding various noise sources and their effects on marine ecosystems. Given the increasing international attention to this issue, the study suggests strengthening its inclusion in a coordinated agenda between the IWC's Scientific and Conservation Committees, as outlined in Resolution 2018-4.
