Full Title

Estimating risks to Cape Verde Island humpbacks in West Greenland

Author

Lars Witting

Authors Summary

Combining abundance estimates with the photo identification of humpback whales off West Greenland, this study estimates that it takes between 12 and 52 years before a whale from the Cape Verde Islands breeding aggregation is caught off West Greenland. As annual population growth between 0.007% and 0.03% will compensate for this loss, the subsistence hunt in Greenland poses no threat to humpback whales off Cape Verde Islands.
