In Korean waters, about 35 species of marine mammals include 8 baleen whales, sperm whale and dolphins have been reported and 21 species are designated as marine protected animals by the Ministry of Ocean and Fisheries(MOF). To protect cetacean species, understanding their behavior, migration and habitat use are critical, but surveying on cetacean species in Korean water are limited in occurrence location, so far. When the identification of individual was not feasible, following one?s passage are only possible with satellite tagging and this is well known as non-invasive tool for large whale ecology study.
We designed tagging and tracking study on large cetaceans passing southern part of East sea to define the movement and identify the migration route of them and establish a scientific basis for the conservation and management plans of the species. This is the first satellite tagging study of a large cetacean in Korean waters, looking into the basic ecology of the tagged individual, providing essential data to develop long-term conservation and management plans
