Full Title

Studying the behavioral impacts of commercial whale watch and swim-with-whale tours on humpback whales in Okinawa, Japan

Author

Stephanie H. Stack, Nozomi Kobayashi, Haruna Okabe, Sachie Ozawa

Authors Summary

This document reports on a new project to measure the impacts of whale watching (WW) and swim-with-whale tourism (SWW) in Okinawa, Japan. The Scientific Committee has previously encouraged further research into the impacts from SWW be conducted (IWC, 2003, p. 387) and recommended that SWW not be allowed until impacts are further understood (IWC, 2019, p. 357). This study is intended to provide a scientific basis for future recommendations for managing whale-based tourism in Japan.
