Abstract

We reviewall knowncatches ofhumpbackwhales intheNorthPacific, withassignments tosixfeedingandfive breedinggrounds. Catchrecordsgo backto1656, althoughinevitablyearlyrecords are incomplete. Takingmaximumvalues for the historical fisheries inAsia andCalifornia-Oregon, the recorded/imputedtotal catchfor the period1656-1972is 40,727whales. The total for just the 20th century (1900-72) is 30,871.
