Abstract

The Indian Ocean Network for Cetacean Research (IndoCet), first conceived in November 2014 at a workshop about humpback whale satellite tagging on Reunion Island, is dedicated to the research of all cetacean species across the WIO. At the last IndoCet meeting in Reunion (July 2019), the value of coordinating stranding response within IndoCet and the Western Indian Ocean region was discussed and a stranding coordinator was identified to provide assistance and support with stranding response, level-A data and sample collection, and training throughout the region. Furthermore, a stranding webpage is planned for the IndoCet website with a metadata table to report cetacean strandings from the region. To highlight the work of IndoCet in this area, for the purpose of this report unpublished stranding data contributions have been invited from various collaborators and contacts within the IndoCet network. The summary presented provides an overview of regional cetacean strandings, stranding response efforts and data collection as well as a preliminary analysis of unusual stranding events.
