From 1962 through 1969, the US Whale Marking Program conducted 11 dedicated whale sightings and marking cruises along the eastern North Pacific coast from northern California to the southern tip of Baja California and beyond. Most surveys were conducted in winter months and 991 groups of large whales were sighted.
