Full Title
The Antarctic Blue Whale Catalogue: new data from 2022 to 2024
Author
Paula Olson, Michael Double, Koji Matsuoka, Ken Findlay
Authors Summary
The identification photographs of 29 new Antarctic blue whales were added to the Antarctic Blue Whale Catalogue, bringing the total number of whales up to 581 (434 left sides, 426 right sides). All 29 IDs were collected opportunistically. The Catalogue has benefitted from the contribution of opportunistically collected photographs, now representing 15% of identified whales. The number of photo-identifications from South Georgia has increased to 51. The collection of Antarctic blue whale identification photographs provide data for capture-recapture estimates of population abundance and growth rates, as well as information on the movement of individual blue whales within the Antarctic region.
