Update from the Whale Watching Standing Working Group

Author

Iwc Secretariat

Authors Summary

The Secretariat provided an update on work on the online Whale Watching Handbook in 2022 and plans for scoping new content; suggestions were invited from the committee. The Handbook’s table of literature was updated in March 2023 and now features the details and abstracts of more than 550 reports and peer-reviewed journal articles on whale watching. Please send any papers to the Secretariat to continue keeping this up to date.

During 2022 the Secretariat received requests for updates from MIRACETI for the ACCOBAMS HQWW case study, Norway for a change to their profile and also updates to the bowhead whale species page. All are now complete in all three languages.

A new promotional plan has been developed by the Secretariat and there will be renewed efforts in 2023 to increase support for the French and Spanish language versions of the Handbook.

In addition, the revised principles and guidelines for WW which were endorsed at IWC68 are now available online and linked to the Handbook and their launch is included in the plan. A full outline of the plan was presented in Annex A.

The SWG welcomed new members to the group including the Convenors of the SC WW Sub-committee, along with the Chair and Vice Chair of the SC, Cristina Castro as an industry representative. In addition, Lisette Trejos (Panama) has joined. Membership and nominations for Chair remain open.
