Abstract
Freshwater cetaceans such as the Amazon river dolphin (Inia geoffrensis) and the tucuxi (Sotalia fluviatilis) inhabit complex ecosystems through their distribution range. These two river dolphins species occur in the major tropical river basins of the Amazon, Orinoco and Tocantins-Araguaia, in seven countries (Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Guiana, Peru, and Venezuela) (Best & da Silva 1989a, b, Pilleri & Gihr 1997, Rice 1998, Trujillo et al. 2010, Hrbek et al. 2014).
