Abstract

The cetacean survey was conducted in the western part of the Sea of Okhotsk in 2019 using a stern trawl type research vessel with a barrel for observation. The objective of the survey is to obtain information on distribution and abundance of large whales using the normal closing mode. The period of survey was from 3 August to 6 September (35 days), and the vessel covered the research area (from the eastern coastal line off the Sakhalin island to 147??E , from 53??N to 57??00 N). During the research distance of 1173,29 n.miles by closing mode in the research area and 1113,74 n.miles by passing mode during transit, the following species including both primary and secondary sightings were sighted ??? common minke whale (25 schools ??? 37 animals), north pacific right whale (5-7), humpback whale (1-2), fin whale (4-7), killer whale (4-8), white whale (1-2), dalli-type Dall's porpoise (32-99), truei-type Dall???s porpoise (2-16), unidentified type Dall's porpoise (192-454), unidentified large cetacean (2-3).
